Carolyn Latanision - Blast Furnace Air Valve, Bethlehem Steel
Watercolor painting by Carolyn Latanision.
Artist Statement: The blast furnaces of Bethlehem Steel still loom today over the landscape of Bethlehem, PA as they have for over 100 years, now minus the smoke they emitted day and night. I grew up just a few blocks from them. As I continue to build my series of paintings of the company, I am focusing in on the many visually interesting parts of the plant with imagery obtained from 4 tours of the plant after it closed in 1995. My cousin, a metallurgist there for his entire career, confirms my titles when I am unsure what, specifically, I’m painting.
